This section is a work in progress (I'm actually working on it today! 3/23). When the NAD asked me to write an article for the NADmag about promoting visual artists, I had been working on getting together an art show for Betty G. Miller in Philadelphia.
So I wrote an article called "Support Your Local Deaf Artists." Working on this article reminded me of things I'd forgotten and made me realize I wasn't being very creative with this task. Naturally, since writing generally comes easily to me, I wrote a lot-- 1900 words, when Anita Farb, editor of the Mag only wanted 1200 words. So I cut it down, then cut it down again, then Anita cut it down one more time. I asked NAD to send me a PDF of the article as it appears in the magazine (NADmag • April-December 2006, 30-32). [LINK-- I haven't gotten it yet.]
[Two asides here, first, I also did the cover for this issue. That is a story in itself! Second, on page 32 are two ads, the bottom one is for Sands of Time: NAD Presidents 1880-2003 by Lawrence R. Newman, published by the NAD. I designed the book and did the layout and editing, as well as designed the cover. It is available at nad.org/sandsoftime]
As promised in the article, I'm providing a checklist of items to cover when planning a show, links to other deaf artists websites, and other ideas-- as well as the story itself, both the long version now tailored for the web, and the shorter one from the Mag. This section of my site will continue to evolve and become a center for ideas and resources.
