"I know your name-- why?" "I've seen your face somewhere before...," I get comments like these often. I've been in people's lives and in their homes, often without them being aware of it. Lots of times the folks who know my name or have seen my face somewhere know me from my work as editor of The NAD Broadcaster, from 1993 to 2001. I've done a lot of work for the NAD (the National Association of the Deaf) over the years, so my portfolio (continually a work in progress) is skewed towards the needs of a non-profit association.
While my heart, and my training, is that of an artist, some people forget that about me. They think of me as a writer or an editor; or they think of me as a manager putting together projects (a producer, in other words); or they think of me as a webmaster or computer techie they can turn to when problems come up-- and they are right. I'm all of that, and more. My strength is putting together books and magazines because the work involved uses the full range of my skills-- editing and writing; layout and typography; photo manipulation and graphic design. My love is doing short term graphic design projects, things like cover designs, designs that go on products such as t-shirts and mugs, brochures and business cards. I relish that because it forces me to stretch and keep coming up with new ideas, and I enjoy being an "idea person."
I'm a d/Deaf woman, a sign language user whose first language is English. I'm a lesbian, and my home is shared equally with my partner, Betty G. Miller, and our four cats and one dog. I'm a vegetarian cook, but not a vegetarian, though I am easing towards being vegan and have begun a blog about it, mostly to give myself some support. I'm a fiber artist who rarely has time to do the hands-on art and crafts work I enjoy. I'm a generalist, not a specialist, and according to an article in WIRED magazine (Feb., 2005; 70) us right-brain people are making a comeback in the world (did we ever leave it? Or did the world leave us?). I've been a dancer, and I've worked for the IRS (Tax Examiner, IMF Adjustments). I'm an essentially lazy person who has done a lot in life. I wear many hats, both figuratively and literally.
